An opportunity has arisen within our Autism First service for a volunteer to enable our groups to continue to access The Otley Sailing Club. This is an opportunity to works towards a funded qualification as well as donate your time to a good cause.
About Autism First:
We are a service that supports adults with autism and a learning disability. The group currently attends the Otley Sailing Club every Tuesday where they are able to access the community to sail their own boats. This is an activity that all of our members thoroughly enjoy!
About the role:
We require an individual that can commit to volunteering every Tuesday, has their own transport, is physically fit and is interested in training towards a Level 2 Power Boat Handling Certificate (fully funded). The Level 2 Power Boat Handling Certificate course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.
It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. While training you will be required to man a safety boat and help the groups should anyone have any difficulties out on the lake, help rig up the boats before and after the session, as well as carry out a number of other duties.
You will not be required to support any individuals as our members receive one-to-one support from Autism First staff. Although you will not be called up to support specific individuals it will be helpful if you are a kind and caring person and have an interest in people with Autism. If you would like to further your knowledge of the condition we will be happy to organise autism awareness training too.
